Today’s News (1/25/18) 
  • Yesterday, by a vote of 55-43, the Senate voted to confirm Alex Azar as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. The New York Times provided background information on Secretary Azar, as well as reactions from various Senators.
  • The White House is expected to release the Fiscal Year 2019 budget no earlier than Monday, February 12th.  At that time, it will be available here.
      Reports and Announcements
  • The Alliance for Patient Access and National Coalition for Infant Health released a video highlighting the risk of hepatitis C amongst women of childbearing age in light of “the opioid epidemic and a national spike in heroin use.”

      Upcoming Events 

  • Center for Science in the Public Interest, MomsRising, American Heart Association, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, American Public Health Association, and Slow Food USA are hosting a tweet chat “to help oppose efforts to roll back school nutrition” tomorrow, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. (EST). Use #FoodFri to participate.
  • Leaders of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN) will host the second annual Obesity Care Network Advocacy Day on Tuesday, February 27th in Washington, DC. Participants will attend meetings with Capitol Hill offices between 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and a lunch briefing at noon. The day’s events will conclude with an ANDPAC and ObesityPAC reception from 4:30- 6:00 p.m. to honor legislators who have championed efforts to promote patient access to, and coverage of, obesity treatment services. For more information and to register.  Once registered, please fill out this form.
  • Join the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (JHCHS) for Healthcare Disaster Resilience: A View to the Future with Implications for PAHPRA 2018 on Thursday, February 22nd at the National Press Club, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. The JHCHS “will release new policy recommendations for building a more effective disaster health system in the United States.”
  • Reminder – The next meeting of the Prevention Strategy Group is scheduled for tomorrow, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the American Public Health Association, 800 I Street, NW.

Opportunities/Deadlines

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed changes to weaken school nutrition by delaying the next levels of sodium reduction, continuing the whole-grains waiver, and allowing flavored one-percent milk to be sold. The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity has developed sample comments, which can be submitted here. The group is also circulating an organization sign-on letter (deadline, tomorrow).
  • The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) is asking organizations to sign a pledge to have healthy meetings, conferences, and events.  To assist organizations, NANA has developed a Healthy Meeting Toolkit. (no deadline)
     Regulatory Comments
  • The Environmental Protection Agency has announced three additional hearings and extended the comment period on the Clean Power Plan Repeal Proposal. Hearings will be held in Kansas City, MO; San Francisco, CA; and Gillette, WY this February and March.
  • After the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declined to host further public hearings on the proposed repeal of the federal Clean Power Plan, DelawareNew York, and Maryland have announced they are hosting a series of “People’s Hearings”  beginning today.
       Funding Opportunities and Awards
  • Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) is conducting a nationwide, open competition for organizations interested in achieving reimbursement for comprehensive asthma care management programs. “GHHI will provide pro bono technical assistance to two sites in 2018 focused on understanding the relevant state and federal policy landscape, selecting an appropriate reimbursement mechanism, and securing payers.”  For the reimbursement support RFP and other materials (deadline, January 29th).
  • The Collaborative on Health Reform and Independent Living has announced a new 2018-2019 postdoctoral program in disability policy research. It is “seeking qualified candidates who are interested in developing research on people with disabilities to influence policies, opportunities, and outcomes for this community.” Each fellow will be hired as a research associate at the Washington State University (WSU) Department of Health Policy and Administration.
  • Voices for Healthy Kids is currently accepting grant applications for campaigns focused on “effective strategic investments in ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns in order to increase public policy impact on healthy weight and living among children.” Grants should be focused on one of the targeted policy levers. (Deadline, February 9th)
  • The Kresge Foundation will soon be accepting applications (April 2nd) for its Emerging Leaders in Public Health (ELPH) initiative – “an 18-month leadership development initiative aimed at helping current and future local public health department leaders advance innovative models, which improve their organizations and position them for new opportunities to meet the changing health needs of their communities.” (deadline, April 30th)
