  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Brenda Fitzgerald has resigned. A Washington Post story provides details, and the Department of Health and Human Services issued a brief statement.  Dr. Anne Schuchat will serve as Acting Director, a role she has previously filled at CDC.
      Reports and Announcements
  • Today marks the beginning of American Heart Month. The Washington State Department of Health put together a document with communications tools and resources for partners to help promote good heart health. Tomorrow is Wear Red Day to promote women’s cardiovascular health.

      Upcoming Events 

  • Join the Campaign to End Obesity for a Congressional briefing marking the release of its second report card evaluating the work of Congress in addressing the obesity epidemic.  The event is scheduled for Monday, February 12th, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. To RSVP.
  • The American College of Preventive Medicine is hosting a full day learning institute at its Preventive Medicine ConferenceMay 26th in Chicago. “This institute will review the history of the opioid crisis in the United States and identify promising and evidence based practices that have shown to effectively address it.”
  • Reminder – TFAH will be hosting two Congressional briefings in February:

  • The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) is asking organizations to sign a pledge to have healthy meetings, conferences, and events.  To assist organizations, NANA has developed a Healthy Meeting Toolkit. (no deadline)

       Funding Opportunities and Awards
  • The Collaborative on Health Reform and Independent Living has announced a new 2018-2019 postdoctoral program in disability policy research. It is “seeking qualified candidates who are interested in developing research on people with disabilities to influence policies, opportunities, and outcomes for this community.” Each fellow will be hired as a research associate at the Washington State University (WSU) Department of Health Policy and Administration.
  • Voices for Healthy Kids is currently accepting grant applications for campaigns focused on “effective strategic investments in ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns in order to increase public policy impact on healthy weight and living among children.” Grants should be focused on one of the targeted policy levers. (Deadline, February 9th)
  • CDC’s Disability Research and Dissemination Center has announced seven new grant opportunities for Fiscal Year 2018. (Deadline, March 5th)
  • The Kresge Foundation will begin accepting applications on April 2nd for its Emerging Leaders in Public Health (ELPH) initiative – “an 18-month leadership development initiative aimed at helping current and future local public health department leaders advance innovative models, which improve their organizations and position them for new opportunities to meet the changing health needs of their communities.” (Deadline, April 30th, 5:00 p.m. EST)
