Kukulcan Spanish Language School
in Cuernavaca, Mexico
The
California Public Health Association-North
(CPHA-N), in cooperation with Kukulcan Language
School, confers Continuing Education
Units for Nurses
participating
in the language immersion experience at Kukulcan
Language School in Cuernavaca, Mexico. As a provider
of nursing continuing education approved by the
California
Board of
Registered Nursing (BRN),
CPHA-N is authorized to grant contact hours in
accordance with the laws and regulations of the
State of California.

CPHA-N
will grant Category 1 CEUs to students
successfully completing
the following courses in Cuernavaca:
Basic
Spanish For Health Care Professionals I
Basic
Spanish For Health Care Professionals II
Intermediate
Spanish For Health Care Professionals I
Intermediate
Spanish For Health Care Professionals II
Advanced
Spanish For Health Care Professionals
Successful
completion of each one week class at Kukulcan
would qualify for 28 Contact Hours (2.8 CEUs)
of
language immersion, up to 84 Contact Hours
(8.4 CEUs) maximum for 3 weeks.
Fees
for course instruction are paid directly
to Kukulcan Language School, which will offer
a $25 US tuition discount to students who are
CPHA-N members.
Students
pay a flat fee of $50
US directly to CPHA-N for continuing education
credit, 2.8 units per week, 8.4
maximum. Payment can be made below using
our secure online payment system.
Or students may download and print the
CEU Registration Form, fill out, and mail
with
a check or money order
payable to CPHA-N to:

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered
Nursing, Provider Number 4952, 28 contact hours
for completion of each course. Student must attend
all sessions in order for contact hours to be granted.
There will be no partial credit given. The continuing
education fee will not be refunded for any reason.

BASIC SPANISH FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS I
SPAN 161
Students
will learn basic communicative tools in Spanish
to resolve typical problems related to
their profession. Students will learn useful
phrases within a medical context, as well
as acquire vocabulary
and grammatical knowledge via exercises,
communicative activities and reading of real-life
dialogues.
At
the end of course, the student will have
acquired skills and will have reinforced
learned structures
via practice and role playing activities
with his/her classmates. By the completion
of
this course the
student will be able to greet and introduce
him/herself, will be familiar with
vocabulary relating to body
parts, injuries, and basic commands,
will be able to conduct consultations with
patients,
conduct
basic examinations, obtain clinical
information and will be able to inform the
patient about
prescribed medications and their
potential side effects.

BASIC SPANISH FOR HEALTH CARE
PROFESSIONALS II
SPAN 162
Students
will learn necessary basic tools to communicate
with their patients in
basic Spanish
by immersing
them in Hispanic culture, with its
social problems, beliefs, etc., which will
aid
him/her in understanding
and respecting cultural differences.
At
the end of course, the student will have
learned the names of common foods,
will be
able to ask
his/her patients about their eating
habits and preferences, and give instructions
about specific
dietary recommendations. The student
will have learned the basic terms
necessary to conduct
a physical exam, will be able to
inquire about the
symptoms of illnesses and how long
they
have persisted, and refer the most
common laboratory
analyses.
He/She will be able to ask about
past events as well as the patient’s
clinical, surgical and family histories.
The student will have acquired
skills and will reinforce learned structures
via practice and role playing activities
with his/her
classmates.

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
I
SPAN 261
Student
will improve knowledge of Spanish, giving it
a medical
context and perfect
his/her linguistic knowledge
via exercises, communicative
activities and readings
that will motivate and encourage the student to use the Spanish
language to resolve typical
problems related to
his/her profession.
Upon
completion of this course, the student will
be able
to conduct intake
interviews
with patients, medical
analyses and procedures, as well as
provide
drug descriptions
and instructions on how to take them. The student will
be able to give orders and instructions,
will be able
to speak in the present,
past
and
future, will acquire an
ample vocabulary which will be useful
in developing
communication
skills via practice and role playing activities with
his/her

Students

comfortably conduct

of interview with
her/his
patients.

SPAN 361
To
develop the four language skills: listening,
reading, speaking and writing, which enable
the students to
communicate effectively
not only
with their
patients but in their personal lives.
Upon
completion of this course the student will
be able to speak in the indicative
and subjunctive
modes
in present,
past and future
tenses.
Participants will
be able to write in paragraph length
discourse as a means of communication.
She/he
will have learned vocabulary and terminology
related to the health
care professions’ perspectives.
