Recent advances in health information technology (HIT), along with new health care reform legislation and health information exchange (HIE) with electronic records, hold the promise to aid in prevention of chronic diseases, such as obesity. In this informative half-day conference, we feature Dr. Carmen Nevarez, President of the American Public Health Association (APHA).
Dr. Nevarez will discuss the challenge of obesity in the United States and other top priorities of APHA. In a cutting-edge panel following Dr. Nevarez’s talk, we will hear how HIT can help transform preventive care in addressing these serious public health problems and learn about HIT developments in the private and government sectors.
The panel will feature Dr. Linette Scott, Deputy Director of Health Information and Strategic Planning for the California Department of Public Health, and representatives from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, and a private sector health information firm.
The panel will engage the audience in discussing HIT/HIE including questions such as:
- How can electronic health care record data/systems support community prevention and early intervention?
- How can all providers, including hospitals, become engaged in HIT/HIE in order to gather more information on obesity and other public health problems within communities?
- What is the role of disease registries in gathering information on interventions and outcomes?
- How do we address provider and consumer concerns about privacy?
- What are the appropriate roles of the federal and state governments?
Please join us for these informative and exciting discussions that will bring you up-to-date on the latest information and developments! Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Nevarez during the coffee hour to discuss public health issues of state and national concern.
