Bordered by San Francisco Bay to the west and rolling hills to the east, Berkeley is renowned for its green space, mild weather, and world-class cultural life. The Berkeley Health Department is made up of nurses, community outreach workers, health care providers, health educators, inspectors, office support staff, health policy specialists and public health program professionals with a combined total of 194 FTEs and a budget of $25.7 million for FY 2010. The Department is organized into four operating divisions: Office of the Director and Administration, Environmental Health Services, Mental Health Services and Public Health Services.
The Director of Health directs the activities of the Health Department with primary responsibility for all aspects of coordination, overall planning, administration, financial management and operation of a wide variety of programs including public and community health services, the prevention and control of communicable disease, mental health services, vital statistics, and environmental health services. This position requires considerable public contact with citizens groups, boards and commissions, as well as other municipalities, County, State and Federal departments and officials.
The ideal candidate will be a highly engaged manager, comfortable interacting with all internal and external audiences. He/she will bring a strong, yet approachable leadership style that will establish trust and confidence in decisions that need to be made around resource allocation and program delivery. The next Director of Health will be well versed in community health services and have a strong background in management of health services. Candidates will be expected to have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Health Care or Hospital Administration, Public Health Administration, Business or Public Administration. An appropriate advanced degree and experience in working with citizen-participation based planning efforts, citizen boards and commissions, and state and federal grant administration is desired. The candidate should possess several years of management, supervisory or administrative experience in a major health care services program.
